Chess Overview

Show an AI opponent who the real grandmaster is in the classic game of chess. The goal of chess is to trap the opponent’s King while protecting your own. At your disposal is an army of pawns, knights, rooks, bishops, the powerful queen, and the king himself. Can you outwit the computer and claim their kingdom before they claim yours?

How to Play Chess

Players take turns moving one piece at a time with white moving first. If a non-pawn piece lands on the same spot as an opposing piece, the opposing piece is removed from the board. If a piece ends its turn in a spot where the King will be captured in the next turn, the King is in “check.” When a “check” occurs, the King must immediately be moved into a spot where it is not under threat. If the King cannot move anywhere without being in “check” again, it is a checkmate and the game is over. The goal of chess is to force the opponent’s king into checkmate before they do the same to you.

The pawns can only move two spaces forward on the first move and only one space forward afterward. Pawns can only capture pieces that are one space diagonally in front of them. If a pawn reaches the other end of the board, it is promoted into any other non-King piece.

The Knights move in an L shape and are the only piece that can jump over other pieces. The Bishops can move as many spaces in a diagonal direction as they want. The Rooks move as far as they want in one straight line direction. The Queen is the most powerful piece and can move any number of spaces in any one direction. The King can move one space in any direction that doesn’t place it in danger of being captured.
